Primary Focus:

To support the Toronto Blue Jays Amateur Scouting Department by conducting original research, interpreting research for Amateur Scouting staff, maintaining existing models and metrics, and contributing to ongoing player evaluations. To work toward more effectively incorporating new streams of information into the draft processes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain advanced descriptive metrics and predictive models related to the Amateur Draft.
  • Collaborate with both front office personnel and Amateur Scouting staff in interpreting the results of internal models and metrics, including the creation of reports, graphics, and other tools to deliver information to end users.
  • Work with Research & Development staff to provide constructive feedback on existing Amateur Draft-adjacent products.
  • Communicate with scouts to identify interesting or undervalued players.
  • Complete ad-hoc database queries and analysis as dictated by circumstances.
  • Recommend new data sources for purchase and/or new techniques to gather proprietary data.
  • Work to integrate new information into existing Baseball Operations processes and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Amateur Scouting front office personnel on implementation of data and player analysis into current scouting process.
  • Provide written player evaluations on current draft prospects.
  • Assist in development of Amateur Scouting staff by providing player analysis, Amateur Draft related research, and interpretation of new data sources.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated baseball passion, interest, or expertise, ideally related to Amateur Scouting.
  • Excellent reasoning, problem-solving, creative thinking, and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and respectfully with both technical and non-technical personnel within Baseball Operations
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully design and execute rigorous quantitative research projects.
  • Ability to train and debug complex multivariate models.
  • Strong understanding of current baseball research as it applies to the Amateur Draft.
  • Proficiency with R, Python or other similar mathematical language.
  • Proficiency with SQL and relational databases.
  • Ability to read, speak and comprehend English effectively.
  • The ability to work with multicultural populations and a commitment to fairness and equality.
  • Ability to work evening, weekend and holiday hours as dictated by the baseball calendar.

 

Relevant, but not Required:

  • Functional proficiency in Spanish or another language (e.g. Japanese, Korean) with applications to baseball.
  • Published quantitative research about baseball (either online or print), related experience with sports teams, and/or open source code to review.
  • Demonstrated experience with machine learning methods, including clustering, random forests, boosting, and neural networks.
  • Previous experience in amateur scouting or player evaluation more generally.
  • Experience combining qualitative and quantitative data within the same model
  • Background in computer vision, anomaly detection, or other unique skill set with applications in video analysis
