We are launching national newscasts on OMNI Television across the Canada, to deliver compelling multilingual relevant content to Canadians.  As an experienced news professional, you know what content our viewers want and how to deliver compelling stories.  As a proven innovator, you know how to emphasize creativity over tradition. 


OMNI is looking for a relentless and innovative journalist capable of using traditional and non-traditional mediums to find stories of national interest from across the country. Reporting to the Supervising Producer, this Assignment Editor will demonstrate sound editorial judgment and exceptional communication skills that will produce engaging content.


Your Role:

  • Generate compelling story ideas through knowledgeable contacts, particularly in the South Asian and Chinese communities
  • Respond to breaking news situations quickly and accurately
  • Assign camera and editing assignments across all regions
  • Coordinate reporters, cameras, live eyes and other news-gathering personnel
  • Liaise with producers and reporters across the country along with CityNews Assignment Desks to ensure work efficiencies
  • Coordinate feeding of footage, packaged segments and other materials from external sources
  • Work various shifts, including evenings and weekends
  • Be plugged into social media and social trends, and possess the knowledge to use it to chase potential stories and investigate news tips


Your Skills:

  • Ability to speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Punjabi is a strong asset
  • Excellent knowledge of the cultural and political landscape of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, as well as national news and international news with a focus on the Chinese and South Asian communities
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deliver under tight deadlines
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • Relevant degree/diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Personality to build and maintain relationships with vital sources
  • Ability to be flexible in a changing work environment
  • Strong working knowledge of the Greater Toronto Area (highways, roads and back routes)
