PAY: 

$18.00 an hour - 35 hours a week 

 

What is James Bay Girls At Bat?

James Bay Girls At Bat is a life promotion program that sets the goal of helping female indigenous youth develop life skills, peer connections and to find a place where they are able to flourish despite the challenges they face. Between 2009 and 2011, approximately 600 children and youth in First Nations communities west of James Bay considered or attempted suicide, according to testimonies compiled by the local Mushkegowuk Council. On April 9, 2016, the Chief of Attawapiskat First Nation declared a state of emergency after 11 attempts of suicide occurred in a single day. As a result, the youth in Attawapiskat and in neighbouring communities are uniting to speak about what their communities need to overcome the suicide crisis and how they can drive this change. Inspired by stories of resilience, a collective and passionate group of organizations across Canada have partnered with Jays Care Foundation in the design and implementation of the James Bay Girls At Bat life promotion program. Youth Champions are connected with caring adults and female indigenous youth across Ontario to form a support group where youth feel safe to learn grow, develop skills and set lofty goals for their future. Together they build life skills, confidence, connections and resilience.

James Bay Girls At Bat (JBGAB) Program Coordinator Overview

Jays Care is looking for a passionate individual with a drive for seeing positive change for youth facing barriers in Canada. This role will involve virtually supporting the design and facilitation of programming for Indigenous youth in remote First Nations across northern Ontario. The Coordinator is expected to have experience with the use of technology and various online platforms.  The Coordinator should be comfortable with child protection standards in Ontario and be able to work on multiple projects at once.

The Coordinator should have experience of leading youth programs and working with children living in historically marginalized communities. Coordination of virtual programs is considered an asset. The primary goal of the Coordinator is to help ensure that Jays Care programming is as fun, safe, positive and as outcome-focused as possible.

In addition to supporting the JBGAB program, the Coordinator will also assist in a range of COVID-19 relief initiatives currently underway or planned for 2021. These initiatives aim to support families across the country as they navigate the on-going impact of COVID-19 on their families and community.

JAMES BAY GIRLS AT BAT (JBGAB) COORDINATOR - ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


JBGAB PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION AND COMMUNICATION (10%) 

  • Engages with program participants and provides important information/announcements via email and other accessible online platforms
  • Offer remote support to a variety of program implementers and beneficiaries including youth, volunteers and partners
  • Organize the ordering and shipment of program materials and resources
  • Draft program materials for promotional and outreach purposes
  • Creates staff and participant resources or communication tools to refer to regarding program events and initiatives
  • Plans and coordinates virtual event logistics such as scheduling, licensing and providing resources in advance
  • Ensure that communication is effective for a diverse audience, considering different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and learning styles
  • Record and track and assess program participation including monitoring trends and/or gaps in program engagement

 

PROGRAM PLANNING AND FACILITATION FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTH (40%)

  • Supports the design and delivery of specialized trauma-informed youth programming, including fun and engaging virtual programming
  • Works with program manager to design, plan and facilitate capacity building events (trainings, youth events, retreats)
  • Co-design, plan and facilitate youth programming that is based on Indigenous culture, teaching and knowledge
  • Co- design, plan and facilitate virtual programming material that helps to enhance connections, and promote important life skills among participants
  • Create engaging virtual activities and compelling content that enhances recruitment and retention of members
  • Ability to problem solve and/or develop contingency plans for various programming events and initiatives

 

PROGRAM RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (10%)

  • Conduct research and ongoing assessments to determine culturally relevant, inclusive & trauma-informed program practices
  • Review existing program curriculum and offer creative insights to enhance the quality of each resource
  • Help to create additional resources for volunteers, facilitators and front line staff that contribute to program design and implementation
  • Co-design online resources that are culturally and developmentally relevant as well as accessible in nature to all current and potential program stakeholders

 

LIAISING WITH AND TRAVELING TO REMOTE FIRST NATION COMMUNITIES (POST COVID-19)

  • Recruit, build rapport and engage with youth, cultural leaders, cultural facilitators, community partners, and other stakeholders that will enhance the program network
  • Co-plan and lead travel and programming in remote First Nations for program volunteers and staff
  • Plans and coordinates event logistics such as travel, accommodation, venue bookings and scheduling
  • Perform solution focused problem-solving skills to help navigate northern Ontario travel and accommodations
  • Assist in building strong relationships and rapport with community and its members

 

JAYS CARE FOUNDATION COVID RELIEF INITIATIVES (40%)

  • Support Jays Care’s on-going COVID-19 relief efforts for it’s beneficiary groups across the country
  • Co-plan and execute initiatives that support emerging needs around food security, adaptive equipment distribution, educational supports and winter clothing
  • Co-plan and execute a range of virtual training workshops for child-facing organizations that support their return to safe in-person programming or virtual programs in the midst of COVID-19

 

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Equity Studies, or related field i.e. human services, health or education
  • 1+ year working with children and/or youth living in historically marginalized communities
  • 1+ year working in the field of adaptive recreation and/or sport for development
  • Understanding of best practices for trauma-informed programming
  • Experience planning and implementing large scale events
  • Strong problem solving and group work leadership skills
  • Willingness to work long hours and outside of regular 9-5 schedule
  • Valid ‘G’ Driver’s License

 

DESIRED ASSETS

  • Understanding and sensitivity of working within the context of a life promotion programs
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of challenges faced by Indigenous people and communities in Canada, including but not limited to the intergenerational impacts of the Canadian residential school systems, colonization, as well as an understanding and willingness to participate in cultural practices and traditions upon invitation
  • Passion to create programming immersed in Indigenous culture and teachings
  • Experience with Zoom, Microsoft Teams or other virtual platforms
  • Knowledge or completion of suicide awareness and/or prevention- based practices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with Individuals and Organizations
