Rookie League Coordinator

Jays Care Foundation | Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club

Rookie League Coordinators will be responsible for supervising up to 10 Camp Directors leading robust day camps throughout the summer. Given the COVID-19 related restrictions currently in place in Ontario, this role will either be responsible for supervising a group of:

  • VIRTUAL camps (if restrictions remain in place); or
  • IN-PERSON camps (if restrictions are lifted).

 

This role is primarily designed to ensure that children living in Toronto Community Housing have access to reliable and fun daily camp programming and that the staff implementing these camp programs have positive, consistent and effective supervision to do their jobs well.

 

Candidates should have extensive experience running recreational programs for children and youth, as well as experience training, coaching and supervising youth staff. The role begins in May with extensive training and planning time, followed by 7 weeks of daily camp programming.

 

All interested candidates are to select their preferred Rookie League program age group they would be most interested in supervising as a Rookie League Coordinator. Please note your selection on your cover letter. Age group options are:

  1. Rookie League ages 6 – 12 years old
  2. Rookie League LITs ages 13 – 15 years old (our Leaders in Training program)

 

REPORTS TO: Rookie League Coordinators

TERM: May 17 – August 27, 2021

COMPENSATION: ($19/hour – 35 hours per week)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

STAFF COACHING & TRAINING WORKSHOP FACILITATION

  • Support the design and delivery of two weeks of intensive virtual training for up to 55 Camp Directors and 45 youth staff from Toronto Community Housing to prepare them for their roles as  Rookie League summer staff
  • Participate and facilitate in a variety of extensive trainings to gain and enhance skills to better prepare all staff as mentors, trainers, and coaches


STAFF SUPERVISION & MODELLING

  • Act as a positive role model for children, youth, and staff by embodying the values of Rookie League, following all Rookie League camp guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Build a sense of team and positive culture within your team of camp staff
  • Prepare and research tools and resources that support best techniques to give to staff in order to set their camps up for success (i.e. pro-active tools for preventing challenging behaviours and celebrating camper successes, tactics for developing a positive camp culture, activities that will bring each weekly theme to life, organizational tools that will help your team plan and implement great programs each day, etc.)
  • Participate and provide support in your staff’s daily program planning sessions to ensure staff are providing high quality programming to all sites
  • Ensure Camp Director’s program plans are handed in each week for review and provide feedback to  enhance and support their programming
  • Oversee and support  Camp Directors at their sites ensuring programming is facilitated at the highest quality, and daily team debrief meetings are effectively completed
  • Provide on-going feedback to staff to help them identify their strengths and areas for growth and development
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and share with the staff team the duties of ensuring all camps and activities are organized in a safe manner adhering to all Health & Safety requirements
  • Ensure all administration duties are met (sending in hours for camp directors, expenses, collecting program plans, monitoring attendance data, weekly challenges, weekly newsletters, consolidating participant data, etc.)
  • Coach Camp Directors in effective ways to resolve internal conflicts with staff, parents, community organizations and/or campers
  • Attend weekly Rookie League Leadership meetings to address any concerns for staff, sites, campers, etc.


MONITORING AND EVALUATION:

  • Work with Jays Care staff to measure impact of programs using a variety of assessment tools with campers, staff and parents
  • Complete daily on-line reports regarding each program and site visit
  • Complete pre, mid and post survey measurement data with parents and campers in program
  • Help to identify Rookie League All-Stars (children, youth and coaches)


EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION:

  • Completion or progress towards a University Degree and/or College Diploma in disciplines surrounding Children and Youth, Recreation, Social Work, Sport and/or Community Programming, Community Development, Teaching
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Completed Criminal Record Check and/or Vulnerable Sector Check

 

Required (must have):

  • 5+ years experience facilitating recreational programming for children
  • Experience facilitating workshops for youth and adults
  • Experience supervising staff in a child-oriented situations
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Experience in program planning, implementation and evaluation of outcome-based programs
  • Working knowledge of current issues, challenges and opportunities in Toronto Community Housing
  • Professional experience in the public and/or the not-for profit sector
  • Excellent communication abilities, strong writing skills, excellent command of the English language
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task, a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Team Player. Ability to see the big picture goals of the organization and contribute on day-to-day tasks
  • Willingness to work long hours and outside of regular 9-5 schedule
  • Willingness to work through a virtual setting

 

Desired (asset):

  • Experience as a Day Camp Director
  • Experience working with children living at or below the poverty line
  • Experience managing, mentoring and coaching adults
  • Experience coaching baseball


IT KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Proficient in using video and online programs to host virtual Rookie League 
  • Able to navigate internet and email use
