Senior Piracy Investigator

Reporting to the Director of Copyright and Broadband, the Senior Piracy Investigator will contribute to Rogers Content Protection Strategy by investigating, analyzing, and drafting forensic reports on individuals and organizations engaged in the unauthorized distribution of Rogers live TV channels and media assets.

The successful candidate must be a self-starter with experience running online forensic investigations from start to finish. These reports will be a core part of the Content Protection Team’s strategy to impact piracy. The ability to think outside the box and create creative solutions to complex and difficult problems is a must.

 

What you will do:

  • Conduct detailed investigations into individuals, organizations, and technical infrastructures involved in copyright infringement.
  • Deliver investigative reports adapted to the intended audience that can be relied upon as the basis for civil and criminal actions.
  • Provide testimony, serve as an expert witness for civil or criminal matters, and attend legal/court proceedings as needed.
  • Make covert purchases through suspect stores in-person and online.
  • Analyze data and generate ongoing reports to identify trends in piracy that can be used to impact our strategy.
  • Manage external vendors to ensure quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Demonetize piracy sites in collaboration with payment processors and ad networks.
  • Determine enforcement options and recommend the next steps for addressing piracy threats.
  • Work closely with internal and external partners involved the anti-piracy work stream.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on emerging trends and technologies in online piracy.
  • Proactively identify new potential piracy targets.
  • Provide internal monthly case reports and update investigation tracking log.
  • Contribute to internal training and knowledge-sharing initiatives to build investigative capacity across the organization.

 

 

What you bring:

  • 5+ years of experience conducting online investigating, preferably in anti-piracy, digital forensics, security incident response, threat intelligence, or similar.
  • Good technical understanding of TCP/IP, Internet routing, HTTP(S), and DNS is strongly preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of Internet governance and the relationships between ISPs, domain names, Whois, IP addresses, and hosting providers.
  • Knowledge of steps involved in building and operating a website, including the ability to understand source code.
  • Experience in the identification of collection and handling of evidence for litigation purposes.
  • Ability to integrate intelligence data from various platforms to identify piracy networks.
  • Knowledge of legal and illegal online content distribution methods, including streaming video, online file hosting, and peer-to-peer file sharing.
  • Experience in the identification, collection and handling of evidence.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms (discord, telegram, 4chan, TikTok, etc.) and how to investigate them.
  • Knowledge of online marketplaces and app stores.
  • Experience in copyright infringement investigations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience building relationships with cross-functional departments.
  • Experience working with an Internet Service Provider or content distribution company is a bonus.
  • Knowledge of copyright law or litigation is a bonus.
  • Strong interviewing skills a requirement.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and hold a valid driver’s license.
