Senior Director, Next Generation Banking Platform

Reporting to the Executive Head, Emerging Services the Senior Director for Next Generation Banking Platform will have primary accountability for designing and delivering technology and capabilities for Rogers to offer a leading suite of financial services to our customers.  This leader will be the product lead for installing next generation banking platform that will power future offerings of financial services and banking products for Rogers.  The ideal candidate will have between 10-15 years experience in Banking Products and Technology and ideally, experience with the chosen technology platform, Vault by ThoughtMachine.  


This leader must bring expertise in financial product technology and software, and experience in cloud environments.  They bring a demonstrated track record team and project leadership and have led them to successful implementations.  This role needs to bring structure and discipline while collaborating with a diverse peer group toward the creation of strong, viable solutions. 

Key leadership attributes include initiative, leadership maturity, collaboration, a methodical and persistent working style, and the ability to look beyond the tactical to have a strategic perspective on the broader implications of their contributions.  It’s especially important to have an enterprise mindset by demonstrating an ability to understand and build connections between the Bank/Financing and the Core business.  We are looking for someone who has a solid command of banking technology fundamentals in a modern cloud based ecosystem.  Experience in a Canadian banking landscape is an asset, so that products align with the Canadian financial industry legal, regulatory and consumer environment. 


This leader must be a caring and supportive coach and team member who can lead a diverse group of talent and peers through a significant new transformation initiative.  This will be significant new capability for Rogers Communications Inc. and business partners here must be brought along on the journey in a supportive and educative way.  Identifying and enlisting top talent and strong internal and external partners is an important leadership trait, as this leader will be at the centre of a new program that has not previously been attempted at Rogers, and one that is on the cutting edge of the global financial services landscape. 


This position will be located in Toronto while benefiting from a flexible work environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a build and implementation plan for the banking core that is underpinned by best practices and which aligns with Rogers IT agile ways of working.  They operate within and navigate an agile work environment and the understanding of the most current technologies and processes.  It is especially important to have had experience implementing and operating a banking core like Vault, as it is a unique system in the banking world, and quickly emerging as a best-in-class solution.
  • Lead the capabilities build for financial product development for both RCI and Rogers bank.  This will entail solutioning integration and experience layers that expose financial products to our customers within our various systems.
  • The complexity of Rogers channel structure means this person must be able to navigate and collaborate with a variety of different product partners in different lines of business.  To that end, they must be able to form positive and productive alliances with key internal partners, across the enterprise and within the Financial and Emerging Services group.  It would be considered a success if this leader’s relationship building went beyond collegiality, to build strong relationships that enlist partners as co-conspirators in building a strong new financial services line of business for Rogers.
  • Manage key external partnerships, particularly with our cloud, solution and implementation vendors, making good use of their talents and resources, while building Rogers’ reputation as a positive and progressive partner.
  • Cultivate a detailed understanding of key issues and opportunities facing Rogers across all lines of business.  Understand not only the needs of key consumer segments we serve, but also how we can enhance their lives and experiences with Rogers by offering them financial services that responsibly grow their purchasing power and help them make the most out of their connected lives. 
  • Build a roadmap of financial services capabilities that align with our strategy and give Rogers a competitive advantage in the marketplace.  Offering financial services is a core strategic pillar of our company, as we operate with a banking license and currently offer credit cards that distinguish us from our main competitors, while giving customers choice and affordability through our current wireless device financing options.  This leader must design the product solutions that expand our offerings and fulfill our strategic roadmap.
  • Good understanding of banking and commercial data how it contributes to financial product design and experience (including Rogers Bank transactional data, Rogers Communications Inc. and external sources (credit bureau and government data sources).
  • Create a sensible and actionable project leadership framework that guides the efforts of a broad group of contributors while setting clear expectations and countermeasures to keep development milestones and investments on track.


Other Skills and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in banking product and technology playing a leadership role
  • Financial and Technical skill set:
  • Familiarity with next generation cloud based banking core platforms, especially Vault by ThoughtMachine (the solution we have chosen to implement)
  • Extensive experience working with various technology partners and vendors; strong influence of others outside of a reporting relationship;
  • Familiarity with key issues and challenges in designing, implementing and operating banking products and platforms
  • Solution oriented; methodical and analytical approach to solving problems and overcoming obstacles in complex tech builds; ability to step back and think broadly about downstream implications; design for sustainability and efficiency
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, recognizing when and how to apply urgency and positively enrol others.
  • Strong people leader, coach, business partner, and one who attracts great talent and energizes support from peers
