We’re looking for a candidate to join the Media Technology team in the role of VMware Systems Administrator.  In this role you will be part of an all-star team of multi-disciplinary subject matter experts that will plan, design, and oversee execution of technology initiatives to deliver on Rogers Sports & Media’s objectives.  You will act as beacons of change and as thought leaders across the organization, accelerating our business through this transformational period and beyond.


This role will cover all aspects of virtualization, and is responsible for effective architecture, provisioning, configuration and deployment of IaaS, PaaS and On-Prem infrastructure within the organization. This candidate will work closely with all members of the Operation/Engineering teams to continuously design, evolve, build, and ensure the integration, manageability, and security of highly available virtualized systems and applications. Responsibilities on these systems include architecture, administration, and provisioning along with research and development to ensure continual innovation within the business unit.


What you will do: 

  • Design and uphold the foundational elements of our infrastructure – in the areas of virtual compute, network, and storage – across both private and public cloud environments.
  • Plan, design, and oversee the on-time, and on-budget implementation of strategic initiatives, ensuring there is consistency in execution as it relates to our Reference Architecture and Technology Roadmap.
  • Provide expert input towards the evolution of the Reference Architecture and Technology Roadmap.
  • Compile project scoping and budgeting in order to secure necessary funding of business initiatives.
  • Actively participate in industry organizations and bring that knowledge to bear within Rogers Sports & Media.
  • Participate in vendor RFIs/RFPs, including lab and proof of concept evaluations of new equipment, technologies, and vendors.

  • Managing multiple tasks of varying complexities, meeting deadlines, and working well under pressure, along with proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.


What you will bring: 

  • Extensive experience managing and administering virtualized technologies such as VMware/VSphere 6.7 and 7.0, NSX, ESXi, VSAN
  • Extensive experience with advanced VM performance troubleshooting
  • Experience with the implementation of advanced resource capacity management strategies
  • Experience with VDI - VMware Horizon View preferred but not required
  • Experience with NSX and L2, L3 networking principles
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerCLI and Python
  • Solid understanding of networking/firewall concepts and their role within an application development environment
  • Strong knowledge of core networking topics such as TCP/IP routing & switching, SSL/TLS, and layer-4/layer-7 load balancing tools & techniques for web applications and services
  • Experience working with network overlay technologies like VXLAN, EVPN/BGP
  • Ability to evaluate, identify, and implement safeguards to virtualized infrastructures designed to minimize potential risks
  • Understand, monitor and review dashboards, logs, and critical alerts to ensure system issues are identified, escalated, and addressed as quickly as possible
  • Assist in the provisioning of virtual servers, including installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems
  • Work closely with Operations and Development teams to identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct system related issues as they arise
  • Function as the SME in provisioning / lifecycle management of hypervisors, VMware support and management tools
  • Practical knowledge of storage and backup solutions including NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, NAS, SAN, RAID
  • Experience with Arista, Cisco Meraki network fabric is considered an asset
  • Experience with Citrix NetScalar or NGINX load balancing technologies is considered an asset.
  • Ability to provide leadership and mentorship to team members
  • Ability to work both independently and in team environments
  • Must be available after hours and / or weekends for emergency related work, service impacting incident resolution, or maintenance that is required during maintenance windows (outside of regular business hours)
  • Certification in the following VMware VCP, Azure, or Amazon Web Services (AWS) or equivalent is an asset
